Abstract

Social adab (moral etiquette) constitutes a fundamental ethical legacy within Islamic civilization that governs relations among individuals and groups through honesty, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. Amid rising individualism, social polarization, and declining public trust in modern society, the values embedded in adab hold potential as a foundation for strengthening civic engagement. This study aims to examine how social adab within Islamic civilization can be developed as a basis for enhancing civic participation in Indonesia. The method employed is a qualitative descriptive-analytical library research design, systematically reviewing primary and secondary sources published within the last five years. The findings indicate that values such as ukhuwah (brotherhood), musyawarah (deliberation), tolerance, and social responsibility align closely with the principles of modern civic engagement, and that Islamic educational institutions such as pesantren and madrasah play a strategic role in internalizing these values through habituation and exemplary modeling. In conclusion, strengthening Islamically grounded social adab can cultivate tolerant, participatory, and responsible citizenship in multicultural, digital-era societies.
