Modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) face transformative challenges in preserving traditional values while adopting effective contemporary governance principles. This study aims to analyze the strategic leadership patterns of kyai and the application of institutional governance in managing modern pesantren in Indonesia. The weakening of single charismatic leadership models and increasing demands for public accountability are driving the need for systematic management reform in pesantren. The method used is qualitative case study with purposive sampling of 5 representative modern pesantren in Java and Sumatra, involving 24 key informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that effective modern pesantren implement hybrid leadership that integrates transformational leadership of kyai with majelis syuro-based governance and managerial transparency. In conclusion, successful modernization of pesantren governance requires a balance between cultural authority and institutional accountability.
